The Brief required accommodating new research and educational facilities for the School of Pharmacy of the Royal College of Surgeons supplementing the existing RCSI buildings in Dublin City Centre. The design derived from a comprehensive analysis of the client requirements, taking into account the complexity of the planning policies and constraints in terms of the scale, height and plot ratio. The building has a rectangular plan with two staircases placed on the opposite corners, linked via internal corridors, providing legible horizontal and vertical circulations. The fully glazed corner of the main staircase is directed to the existing RCSI building, creating an important visual link between the two. Articulating its structural elements, juxtaposing the building forms, materials and textures delivered its dynamic architectural image. The building organically blends into the surrounding urban environment fabric and yet represents an accomplished architectural statement in its own right. The building received RIAI Irish Architecture Award-Exhibition 2005.
